KNITTING ALONG

potential stupidity...but i'd rather catch it now!

restarted yesterday and got thru row 12 with no problems (i really should know better than to start fine lace late at night!)...but now i've got a horrible sinking feeling--i'd forgotten that one usually reverses the shaping/decreases on the "wrong" side rows (the even rows in this case) :-|

there doesn't appear to be any allowance or explanation for this in the chart for the center panel--it just says k2tog for the symbol...is it assumed that the knitter should be doing p2tog (even though it's garter st lace) on the even rows? or am i just thinking too much? lol

*feeling a bit foolish regardless of the answer*

I did k2tog on both sides ... so I hope that you are thinking too much, otherwise, I am wrong too! :)

Hmmm. I have yet to start (bad knitalong host!) But I would reverse the decreases knitwise, like on the "wrong" side do a ssk where the chart calls for a k2tog and vice versa. That way, the decreases will look line up when viewed from the right side.

I've also been doing K2tog on both sides, just assuming that was the way...As I think about it, could it be that doing it this way compensates for a bias pull if all the dec are leaning the same direction?

Yep, I've been doing K2tog on both sides too. I'm not saying that it's right but it's what I've been doing.

I would sugest checking out The Knitting Curmudgeons page (http://www.knittingcurmudgeon.com/). She's got an explanation in today's post of knitted lace vs. lace knitting and k2tog vs. ssk. I'm thinking that with lace knitting (where the pattern is on both sides, you're supposed to ssk the k2tog on the reverse side. That way the stitches would all lean properly when the RS is facing you. Sorry, unless it's really obvious, I would just continue with corrections from here on out unless you've only just cast on....

Well, I've been doing k2tog on both sides, because I'm pretty literal with patterns, and it didn't say to do anything differently on the wrong side. I think mine looks fine, so I'm not about to change anything and start over. If you've already done several rows, I wouldn't change. This may not be technically correct, but that's what I've been doing :)

lol looks a bit like i opened a can of worms here ;-) (hopefully though it'll come in handy)

it's good seeing i wasn't the only one who translated it literally. tkg's post is exactly why i asked (i'd read it earlier)...but i suspect the knitted lace she's referring to is stockinette based--in other words it has a definite "right" and "wrong" side...and in that case i would have automatically reversed the decreases...but this is garter based...and i don't think it works the same (please correct me if i'm wrong)--it doesn't seem to me that it would make that much difference, especially since ALL of the decreases are k2tog, not paired...i think what i'll do is try the ssk's (or k2togb, as it won't make enough difference to matter in this case) and see if i can tell the difference...at the moment i don't have enough showing that i can even see a PATTERN, much the less whether or not my decreases are "right" ;-)...if it becomes a noticeable difference, i'll frog it and start again...i'm in no rush :-)
